Sometimes a yard just needs one thing done right to pull everything together. That's exactly what happened here near Geist Reservoir. The beds were cleaned up and loaded with fresh black mulch - and the difference it makes is hard to ignore.

Here's what we were working with - a wide, curving bed running along the back of the house with several shrubs and a tree that needed some definition. The grass line meets the mulch bed at a sharp, clean edge, and that contrast between the deep black mulch and the green turf is what really makes it pop.

Black mulch does more than look good. It helps the soil hold onto moisture, which means your plants aren't fighting as hard between rain or watering cycles. It also slows down weed pressure in the beds - not a perfect solution, but it cuts down the maintenance work noticeably over the season.

The key to a mulch job that actually looks sharp is in the edging and the depth. Too shallow and it breaks down fast, too thick and you're smothering roots. Getting that balance right, keeping the edges clean, and making sure the mulch is worked evenly around the base of plants - that's where the details matter.

A well-mulched bed holds up through the rest of the season and keeps the yard looking like someone actually takes care of it. If your beds are looking a little rough or worn out, a fresh layer of mulch goes a long way.
