Here's a bed we built along a corner foundation in Indianapolis. The homeowner wanted something that looked natural, held up over time, and gave a focal point to an otherwise flat stretch of ground. A hydrangea tree as the centerpiece was the right call - it'll fill in beautifully and give that corner some real presence.

The natural boulders are doing more than just looking good. Placed along the front edge of the bed, they're retaining the soil and keeping the mulch from washing out toward the lawn. No plastic edging, no cheap borders - just solid stone that's going to stay put season after season.

Dark mulch makes a big difference here. It contrasts cleanly against the white brick and the natural tones of the boulders, and it pulls the whole bed together. Fresh dark mulch also helps retain moisture around new plantings, which matters a lot when you're getting a young tree established.

Getting a bed like this right is about more than just throwing down some mulch. It's the grade of the soil, the placement of the boulders, the depth of the mulch layer, and making sure everything is set up so it actually lasts. We think about all of it before we ever break ground.
